Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights impacting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and close to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that such operations become unprofitable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
