Conservative reactions to the limited release of documents involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the previous administration highlighting the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while different voices expressed frustration over how extensive redactions cast former President Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable manner.
Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Fervent Hyperbole
Justice Department representatives justified the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “At no point in U.S. the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been so transparent with the American people about such a sensitive legal matter,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter outlining the redaction procedure.
Questions Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's identity and image are visible in some of the documents, the widespread redactions prompt serious questions about the information may be concealed behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly demanded increased transparency.
“The public are furious and walking away,” posted Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the censorship break the law, and suggested that a future legislature may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, this file dump egregiously fails to comply with both the spirit and the letter of the act,” he continued.
Some Rightwing Commentators Rally In Support of the Release
However, some rightwing pundits and Trump loyalists swung firmly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a justice department run by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of pages that are completely censored, and many of the individuals shown in pictures have their identities obscured.
But a few are not, featuring prominent figures like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, allowed some conservative figures to launch the offensive.
“It’s quite ironic how the Democrats falsely accused Donald Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil documents that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a woman that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Former President Spokesperson Releases Statement
Bill Clinton has consistently said he was aware of no criminal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any misconduct. “The White House hasn’t been concealing those files for an extended period only to release them late on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“This is about shielding officials from future revelations, or from information they’ll try and hide permanently. Therefore they can release as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement concluded.
Overall Conservative Commentary Remains Muted
Nonetheless, overall discourse on the right was comparatively muted following the release, particularly when juxtaposed against the loud calls for action that preceded the legislative approval to pass a law requiring the files' publication.
Loomer, who recently accepted press credentials at the Pentagon, had been one of the loudest proponents for a complete disclosure. In February, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi specifically after a group of conservative personalities were provided hard-copy binders of files that included no new data.
