The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
